As I enter the latter years of my life I thought I'd pass along some advice on lessons I've learned all to often the hard way, particularly regarding trailers with winches.

These are Big Dads' advise regarding winch cables.

    Why steel cables are bad.
    1. They kink
    2. They flatten on the winch drum
    3. They fray (ouch).
    4. They wad up on the winch drum and cause it to bind.
    5.They corrde
    6.Expensive to replace.
7.Break, and when that happens have good health ins.

Over a year ago I went with a synthetic cable rope and haven't looked back. They're much cheaper and more resilient, plus they don't posses any of the cons listed above.

On my application I use a 5000# winch with a 8200# strength rating rope. I recently purchased a backup rope just in case and it's rated at 10,000#.

One more piece of advise learned the hard way. when either winching in or out always put a 4x4 piece of wood about 12" to 15" in front of the tire in case something lets go.

    Happy trailering boys.

    Four rules:

    1.) You don't tug on Superman's cape.
2.) You don't spit into the wind.
3.) You don't pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger

    AND THE MOST IMPORTANT

    4.) You don't mess around with Jim/Slim.

    Good points to ponder.

I do have one really important thing to add. It's a winch.

    Stop snatching with it!!

What brand of winch and manufactures of steel cables have you used for full disclosure? In your opinion are all winches, steel cables and features equal?

Here is my fathers greatest wisdom to me:

Like is hard, if you are happy 25% of the time, you are doing better than most people, so forget trying to be happy and maybe happiness will find you.

Life is not fair, that is a fairy tale sold to suckers.

If you make poor decisions, life will be harder, so get to work and don’t **** up.

I use a Badlands winch, as far as the steel cables I previously used I got them at Fastenal. And as far as you last question goes I've only used two brands of winches since I've had two trailers so, I'm sure not all winches and cables features are equal but I can only speak for the brands I've had..... Superwinch and Badlands.

I've been told that about winches, specifically the cable part, by a LOT of offroading guys. So when I put a winch on my Raptor I went with a Warn Zeon 10k with a NYLON rope. I've never had any troubles with it at all. Ever. (to be fair, I've never used it to pull myself out. lol. I always end up using it to either clear trees out of the path or pull others out when they get stuck).

    1. Never assume you know what they are thinking, cause you'll be wrong.
    2. Never chase money. If you do what you like to do, you will be good at it, and the money will follow.
    3. People dont change without pain.
